A New Path

I have always loved taking pictures and picked up my first camera at the age of nine.  While I was snapping pictures of friends, my siblings and my travels, I had no idea the paths photography would lead me down.  My years as a runaway were not recorded.  There was no camera and eating was my main focus.  Survival.  I started snapping shots as my children arrived documenting their births, their school functions, their growth... working what ever jobs I could to survive.  Then in 2004 death and sadness would take over my life.  I picked up my camera and started shooting in a whole new light.  Literally.  It became a obsession.  Chasing the light.  I started shooting landscapes, flowers, buildings, sewing needles...whatever I could find to capture.  I had no desire to do it professionally at that time.  I finally worked up the courage to start photographing people and then weddings and earned a few dollars here and there.  My art started selling on line and in local studios.  People were writing and calling me.  They wanted to publish my work.  Me?  Still, what was my purpose?  Why did God put this camera in my hand?  I met many others with the same passion and made such great friends.  Normal happy and loving people.  Not the same as the people in my past.  They encouraged and supported me.  Strangers that were more loving than most members of family.  I have photographed cancer survivors, lost and homeless animals, our boys being shipped back home in coffins and somehow, I carry them in my heart now.  Now I have a new family.  I have a new purpose.  I have to make the world a little bit better of a place.  And so my journey continues.

Pets Are Family Too

Our pets are a big part of our family but their stay is often briefer.  It is important to catalog their lives as well.  I love all animals but have a special fondness for dogs.  People often ask, "How do you get them to sit still?"  I don't.  I just use their mobility to get those timeless shots and work quickly.

A Father's Pride

A very proud father called me and asked that I photograph his daughter's college graduation.  I could hear the excitement and pride in his voice.  In person, it was even more obvious.  I think this capture expresses his emotions perfectly.

A New Angel

My grand daughter Kaylee was born on May 4, 2011.  I have not felt this much joy, awe, amazement, ...since my children were born.

Seniors

Seniors are as different as snowflakes.  Each has their own passions, ideas, and personalities.  I love working with them and capturing all that makes them different and beautiful in their own way.

Sisters

They fight each other and they love each other.  It is a joy to be around sisters both young and old.

Country Baby

I try to bring a natural candid feel to all of my images.  This can be especially difficult in the studio.  This baby was a natural in front of the camera though.  This image tied for second place in the Photographic Society of America International Club Competition.

I love photographing children. I love their sense of wonder and adventure. For a little while, I get to be a child again.

Sometimes, the smallest word or gesture can have an impact on someone's life. I am working on a tribute series for some of the people that have impacted me.

365 Self Portraits

I have finally completed my project for JPG magazines 365 daily self portraits theme. It has been a challenge but very fun. I am much more comfortable in front of the camera now and have a daily diary of this year's journey.

A Gift

Everyone talks about how ugly the world is. I disagree. The world is incredibly beautiful. It is only a lot of people in it that make it such an ugly place to be at times. We can drown ourselves in all that is wrong or we can separate ourselves from those that inflict ugliness and rejoice in the beauty that God has created all around us. This beauty can be found in nature...and often... in those people that are out there searching for that same beauty.

A Moment with Nature

It is those moments that I dream up and capture with my camera that are often the happiest little moments that make up my life. When that moment is captured perfectly, I don't know what to call them. Are they made up of luck or skill? Perhaps a bit of both? Who cares...they just are. I am going to treasure each and everyone.

Our Move

We have been busy with our move to Corpus Christi and getting to know our new home. I am so excited about the new photography opportunities here. I have many hopes for the future here. After we get settled, I hope to open a studio/gallery here. I would like to teach photography classes and display my work as well as the work of the many other talented photographers I know. Meanwhile, I will be building my stock photography with images of our beautiful new home town.

I have thought about starting a blog for sometime and today just seems to be the right day to do just that. It is my hope to share my journey through my photography.

Day One

I've thought about starting a blog for some time now and today is a good day to start. Life is a journey and I try to capture as much of it as I can through my photography. I try to shoot something everyday. Somedays the work is easier than on other days. But I am always learning and that is what keeps me going.
